Good day beautiful humans!
On July 12, 2024, the Aboriginal Health and Wellness Centre of Winnipeg Inc. (AHWC) announced that the province’s first Supervised Consumption Site (SCS) will be opening in 2025! The long awaited and desperately needed announcement for this health site was met with enthusiastic support and has taken – and will continue to take – an all heads, all hearts, all hands approach.
Thanks to the Supporters of the Safer Consumption Site
We thank the Honourable Bernadette Smith (Minister of Housing, Addictions, and Homelessness and Minister of Mental Health), a long time friend of AHWC’s work, for their continued support and for their presence on this day.
We also thank the many Elders, Knowledge Keepers, dignitaries, staff, addiction specialists, community members, allies, volunteers, peers, government officials, and people with lived or living experience with substance use for showing up in a huge way!
A special thank you goes out to AHWC’s Community Partner Cohort, made up of Sunshine House, Ka Ni Kanichihk, Substance Consulting, Main Street Project, and Manitoba Harm Reduction Network. We could not do this work to the degree needed without the support from all of you.
Here are some amazing moments from the day’s event that we would like to share with you.
Feel free to reach out to us, we are always happy to hear from your questions, thoughts, suggestions, and/or concerns at scs@ahwc.ca
